Buying a house is both exciting and overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers.  Buying a house is one of the biggest decisions and commitments you will ever make in your entire life.  Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to take note of the following steps, in order to ensure making the right decision prior to making this huge investment.

1) Hire a skilled real estate agent.  Someone who knows what they’re doing can save you a lot of stress and help you organize all the frustrating contracts and negotiations.   It’s best to talk with a few different agents before making your selection.

2) Have your finances squared away.  This means that getting a pre-approval for a mortgage ahead of time is absolutely imperative.  This can help you to be realistic with your purchase.  Don’t waste time looking at homes that are completely out of your league financially.

3) Decide what you absolutely won’t compromise on.  There is never going to be a perfect house, however, it’s important to know what your priorities are.  For example, is it absolutely necessary for you to have a guest bedroom or a big yard?  Would you be willing to sacrifice a huge kitchen for a house in a wonderful neighborhood?  Think about the amenities you will absolutely not budge on and those that you would be willing to give up for the right home.

4) Educate yourself on the terminology of the market.  While it’s great to have an experienced real estate agent, it’s always smart to know the lingo of the real estate game yourself.  That way, you won’t be left out of the know when it comes to important details.  At the end of the day it’s going to be your home which means you should be heavily involved in the experience of selecting it.

5) Have a home inspection done.  DO NOT buy a home without having it inspected.  Inspectors can help to eliminate bigger headaches in the long run.  It’s a worthy investment if it can save you from future problems.
